Modifying Boxing for MMA
There is something we must all keep in mind when it comes to modifying a boxing stance for MMA. This revolves around the positioning of the rear foot. This is no minor task. If the positioning of the rear foot mirror a traditional boxing stance, then you're going to be in a lot of trouble if you attempt to fight in an MMA match.
In short, in a traditional boxing stance, th rear foot is in closer making a more closed centerline. This closed up a number of targets on the body. It also provides for more tork and power in punching. Now, why is this such a bad thing as far as MMA goes? There are a few reasons and they all center on a very obvious fact: the rules of MMA and boxing are different. Hence, what works in a boxing bout needs to be tweaked for the ring.
A traditional boxing stance will immediately open you up to lead leg kicks. Over time, these kicks will prove devastating as they will destroy the fighters ability to stand. Also, the traditional boxer stance will prove incredibly difficult to defend takedowns with. That is, sprawling will be enormously difficult. Plus, the lead foot is wide open for a single leg takedown.
The moral here: traditional boxing always needs to be modified for mixed martial arts competition.
