Self Defense and Body Shots
There are a lot of people out there that possess opinions on boxing's value as a self defense art. One of their main criticisms centers on the notion that is highly possible to break one's hand when throwing punches without a glove. This is a partially accurate assessment. That is, if you throw bare knuckle blows to an opponent's head, there will always be the possibility of a broken hand. The knuckles are amall bones and they are susceptible to injury. However, and there are those that advise to avoid using punches at all since the hand is so susceptible to breaking.
This opinion is just flat out idiotic. The reason such an opinion makes so little sense if because it ignores a very simple strategy: hit the body.
Knock out blows can be achieved through a variety of body shots. Body shots come with far less of a risk of breaking one's hands than does hitting the skull. So, work body shots in a self defense training scenario. But whatever you do, do not abandon the art of boxing to follow a false premise.
