Drills Translating to Sparring
If there was one thing that confused many folks new to boxing, it would be the annoying fact that many of those combinations that you work on focus mitts or heavy bags do not translate well into sparring or even free flowing drills.
If this is a concern of yours, fear not….It happens to the best of them. The reason some of your “drilling techniques” do not make a smooth transition is because there is another person sparring right back with you. Obviously, there is a huge difference between someone who is holding focus mitts complacently vs. someone who is sparring. If you work a focus mitt combination of jab/cross/hook – bob/weave a hook right and immediately bob/weave a hook left – then cross/hook/cross it is doubtful the stars will align in such a manner against an uncooperative opponent. However, you need to always have a starting point for you training that develop proper basics and the simplest form is partner drills such as focus mitt training works in this regard.
When you move on into a sparring session, the addition of resistance means you will be unable to display techniques “as is” unless you are going a little hard on someone who is not all that experiences….and you shouldn’t be doing that either!
