A Brief Strong Side Forward Point

A short discussion yesterday had me thinking about the lead hand and its relationship to a strong side forward punch. Here is my take:

One of the common misunderstandings about the strong side forward lead punch is that it is an improvement of the jab. This is not an accurate assessment. The purpose of the strong side forward punch is to deliver expanded power in the lead hand to deal with a self-defense scenario. Frequently, aggressive motions involve wide circular swings. This creates scores of opening which can be capitalized on by a person with reliable boxing/striking skills.

Since the power hand is forward, it travels less distance. When it hits the target, it hits with expansive impact. Again, this is a preferable option in a self-defense scenario since it delivers a larger “pay load” from a much shorter distance.
