Blitzing the Bag
Working out on a heavy bag is a critical component to being able to effectively develop the tools necessary to be a solid boxer. Now, this does not mean that hitting the heavy bag will automatically translate into boxing skill. What it does mean is that if you hit the bag often and properly, you will develop the endurance necessary to effectively box. (Note: this does not mean that you will automatically have 'ring' endurance from hitting the bag, but you will be in better cardio shape that you would jumping into the ring without really having developed any bag derived cardio vascular conditioning)
Now, it also needs to be noted that there is a right way and a wrong way to hit the heavy bag. Listless, borish, incosistant training sessions on the heavy bag really do very little for developing skill. There needs to be a focused training mentality present as well as a the employment of certain tips/drilling guidelines in order for the bag to be effective. Don't fret. They aren't all that tough.
Here's one: if you are 'freelancing' on the bag, try to keep combos at 5 and above when hitting the bag. This will aid endurance far greater than doing 2 or 3 punch combos all the time.
Also, they ar drills that can be employed in order to provide a little variety.
For example, you could perform interval training on the bag such as 15 seconds light/15 seconds blitzing; 15 seconds light/15 seconds jab/cross blitz' 15 seconds light/15 seconds body shot blitzing, etc.
In short, there is great variety available with bag training so take advantage of it!
