The Will To Fight
The body aches with pain. The sun has not even risen yet it seems like you have already completed a 12 hr work day. You try to move in your bed, but your body simply will not let you. Your joints are sore. Your back aches. You can feel painful ulcers in your mouth which are the result of biting your own lip due to breathing heavy during your workout. In all, you feel like you have been th victim of a brutal crime. So why do you keep doing it? It is because you possess the will to fight.
Far too often, althetics are marginalized or trivialized in our society by people who do not understand the positive impact athletics bring. Yes, many will provide lip service and mention how athletics build character and such, but they do not understand the power athletics have on shaping an individual's character and developing a completely unique outlook on life. This is why many of us survive the pain. Actually, it is the reason why many of use thrive on the pain.
There is much to be gained by the desire to "swallow" the brutality we inflict upon our bodies. The reason for this is that we are willing to accept the short term suffering that a little discomfort (even a great deal of discomfort) will bring provided that it changes our lives for the better.
When a person trains to be a fighter, they become a fighter. Yes, even if they never step foot in a ring and dedicate their career to gym fighting they are still fighters. This creates a new identity and new consciousness that allows the person to transcend every other minimal problem in life. For some, the ability to become skilled in their new found (and somewhat odd) hobby creates a new way they can idenitify themslves. When a person is crushed under the weight of a dead end job, the redefining of one's identity in the form of becoming a 'fighter' essentially provides an impetus for redefining the entirety of one's being. In other words, they become a new person as a direct result of their training. This will never occur, however, if one trains half-heartedly. There needs to be a commitment to intense training in order for the valuable character change to occur. With such intense training, however, there will be much intense pain. Of course, this pain will be completely overcome if the person possesses the all important will to fight
