The Shovel Hook

The shovel hook is a type of punch that is often visible in boxing matches, but it is not one that you often here discussed in boxing classes. This may seem odd considering that the shovel hook has the potential to be a knockout punch particularly if it is delivered to the liver. Part of the reason that the shovel hook is not mentioned is because it is not so much a singular punch as much as it is a hybrid punch combining the body hook and the uppercut. While the hook hits horizontally and the uppercut hits in an upwards direction, the shovel hook hits at an angle between the hook and the uppercut. (Think of dissecting a 90 degree angle and you'll get the picture)

Why is it an ignord punch? Actually, it isn't as it is used all the time. Th problem is that when a shovel hook is delivered in aa boxing bout, the announcers have a tendency to call it a generic "hook" or just refer to it as a "liver shot." While accurate to an extent, these descriptions are also somewhat of a misnomer as they do not accurately describe the angle of attack of the shovel hook.

Regardless, next time you hit the heavy bag, give the shovel hook a little attention while training. It is a good punch that is worth developing.
