Inch by inch, step by step

"It's a simple workout."
"I didn't have the time for it."
"All it is is pushups, sit ups and squats."
"My time was too limited."
"Really?"
"Really."
"How many can you usually do?"
"100 push ups. 100 sit ups. 50 squats."
"You didn't have the time fit that in?"
"No."
"Did you have the time to do 1 push up, 1 sit up and 1 squat?"
"Hmmm?"
"You don't have to do the whole workout if you are pressed for time. Do the minimum amount that you can instead."
"Will that work?"
"Yeah. Every little bit adds up, you know."

No, I didn't know. And he is sincerely right. Often, when we are busy or pressed for time we will neglect the exercise programs that provide us with valuable benefits. It would seem as if there is nothing we can do in these situations, but the truth of the matter is that we always think in terms of all or nothing workouts. That is, we think of the full one hour workout as opposed to five minutes of it. That is just a matter of mental conditioning. Sadly, we do not often think about the hugely positive benefits of the very brief 10 minute version of the workout that we can squeeze in when we are pressed for time. After all, ten minutes is significantly better than nothing, is it not? But, we are conditioned to believe that such minimal workouts are useless. This is a logic flaw.

Think of the following, for example. Say you want to take a vacation next summer and you are short on cash. You drink diet soda and purchase it from Rite Aid where it costs $1.49. You do this 5 days a week. That costs $7.45 a week. Multiply that by 50 weeks and you get $372.00. Imagine if you replaced that diet soda with a bottle of Mineral Water that cost .79 cents? And, this is a big bottle of spring water that lasts two days so you only need three bottles per five days. That will run you $118.00 a year. That is a HUGE savings.

Think of exercise in the same manner. Burning a mere 10 extra calories a day yields 3,650 calories a year. That is a full pound. Those little short exercise rounds clearly do add up in the end.
