What The Ovrhand Right Is NOT

Before explaining what the overhand right is, it becomes important to explain what the overhand right IS NOT. What the overhand right is not is (not) a wild looping punch designed to knock the person out wildly at all costs. In other words, avoid the "street fighter" overhand right.

In such an instance, a person who is not trained in boxing and has no idea how to deliver an effective punch will lead with a looping rear punch. (They mean to throw a cross, but end up delivering an overhand) They literally LUNGE with their body as a way of getting all their weight behind the punch. This works to a degree, but it is also the sign of a one trick pony style boxer. Watch early UFC's for these types of fighters. They can deliver a huge punch at the outset, but after a few seconds, they have delivered all they have. If these guys are not able to knock their opponent out in the first few minutes of the fight, then they aren't going to knock them out period.

Quite simply: throwin a wild, looping overhand punch with no finesse or skill will get you in mor trouble than its worth and should be avoided. Better yet, learn the proper mechanics and the proper way to deliver the punch rather than throwing crazy, loopy nonsense.
