Non-Essentials and Following Through on Your Goals/Ideologies

There has been so much stated about refinement and avoiding accumalation of techniques, but often these statements are presented in broad, sweeping generalizations that no one ever really can center their focus on what needs to be done to accomplish those tasks. This would seem like a conflicting set of goals. Or, perhaps, it is merely an act of duplicity. Ok, I have just made a desparaging remark. I guess that means the burdon is now upon me to explain myself. Ok, here goes: people have a tendency to make these statements in generalized terms because they have no real committment to actually follow through with their statements. In other words, they will speak about refinement and eliminating non-essentials, but they have no real desire to follow through with what they have claimed. In other words, they may say they wish to avoid accumalating techniques, but their actions follow this 'advice' in no way, shape or form. These are conflicting goals and ideologies that ultimately undermine their training and skill development.
